Vegan in Vietnam

Read the blog

Vietnam has slightly less delicious vegan cuisine than nearby countries Thailand and Cambodia. The dishes are a little less flavorful and a little more basic. Still, in some places you can eat very good vegan food in Vietnam. In this article from vegan in Vietnam, we talk about the best vegan dishes and tricks to make sure a dish becomes vegan. On to vegan in Vietnam!

The best vegan restaurants in Vietnam

There are many vegan (friendly) restaurants to be found in Vietnam. Below we list our favorites by destination:

Vegan restaurants in Dalat

  • Vegan House. Most dishes here cost as little as 30,000 dong (€1.20). In addition, they often have a vegan buffet that you can grab anything from. This is highly recommended if you want vegan typical Vietnamese food.
  • Primavera Italian. The most delicious Italian dishes can be found here. They can easily make the pizza without cheese, order the marinara pizza with possibly olives and onion and you will really feast.

Vegan restaurants in Hoi An

  • Nhat Da Vegan Restaurant. You can eat cheap and delicious vegan food here. In addition, you can also take a fun vegan cooking class. There is more information about it at the bottom of this article.
  • Banh Mi Chay. This is by far the very tastiest vegan banh mi in all of Vietnam. The bread is fresh and crusty (we haven’t eaten bread as good as this anywhere) and the ingredients match perfectly. In addition, one banh mi is only 15,000 dong (€0.60). Unbelievable how she can make such a delicious sandwich for this money.

Vegan restaurants in Da Nang

  • Roots Plant Based Café. All the dishes on the menu here are vegan and how hard it is to choose. After going back several times, we have discovered that the falafel bowl with hummus, olives and walnuts is surely our favorite. Really a very tasty and nice place in Da Nang.
  • Kurumi Healthy Vegan. Here, too, the choice is vast. Go for a tasty banh mi for breakfast, a pasta or soup for lunch and the “quesadilla” for dinner. Furthermore, Kurumi is known for its amazing desserts and sweets so make sure you will check this out.

Vegan restaurants in Hué

  • Madam Thu Restaurant. You will find typical Vietnamese dishes that can also be made vegan. A lovely evening out in a nice place.
  • Nook Eatery. If you are more in the mood for Western food, you can eat delicious vegan burgers, pasta or Mexican food here. A nice place where many travelers go in the evening.

Vegan restaurants in Hanoi

  • WITH Vietnamese restaurant. Everything at WITH is vegetarian, in addition they also have many vegan choices. All the dishes are typically Vietnamese and there really is a lot of choice.
  • VEJO – The Vege Journey. You will also find an enormous number of delicious dishes here. We especially liked the peanut sauce here.
  • Veggie Castle – Vegan Buffet Chay. Do you feel like enjoying different flavours from a vegan buffet and eating for a small price in Hanoi? Then you should be here. Located in the Old Quarter, it has a cozy interior.

Vegan vietnamese dishes

Vietnamese cuisine is not very set up for vegans, most dishes contain (a lot of) meat. Fortunately, though, most dishes can easily be made vegan by leaving out the meat. There is generally little milk used in Vietnam but lots of egg.

Fortunately, you can also find a lot of tofu in Vietnam. Especially the fried tofu with tomato sauce proved to be a favorite dish. Furthermore, you obviously can’t ignore pho, the Vietnamese noodle soup. Make sure you clearly state that you do not want meat broth. In fact, many restaurants don’t think about this. The banh mi is a delicious filled baguette. The traditional banh mi is spread with pork patty and has many kinds of meat as toppings. Fortunately, you can find many options in tourist cities these days for a banh mi with tofu and vegetables. Furthermore, it is helpful to learn the word chay (vegetarian). We always said chay 5 times when we went into a restaurant where they spoke poor English. It has actually always worked out. If you don’t trust it, you can always use Google Translate.
