The 12 most fun games for traveling

Read the blog

In the Netherlands they often don’t make enough time for it but what could be more fun than playing games? When traveling, you obviously can’t bring big board games. Fortunately, more and more original games are coming with smaller “on-the-go” packaging. In this article, we list the 12 most fun games for traveling.

Check out all our other travel tips here.

Games for 2 people traveling

All games are suitable for 2 people traveling. They are small, compact games and sometimes even specially designed for 2 people.

  1. Yahtzee

Of course Yahtzee! Who doesn’t know it. All you need for Yahtzee are 5 dice and a (small) score pad. You can buy Yahtzee in many stores including Blokker and Hema (for the dutchies). If you only want to take the dice with you when you travel, you can also download Yahtzee’s app. You then simply fill in the scores digitally.

  1. Uno

Uno is one of the easiest card games which you can easily learn. Travelers from all over the world know this game so you can easily play it with several people as well.

  1. Skip-bo

Our favorite game! On our world tour, we play this really often. Skip-bo you play with a combination of luck but also a little bit of strategy. You can make the game itself as easy or as difficult as you want. Do you choose to put the stack open or closed?

  1. Phase 10

This is a fairly unknown game but great fun once you figure out how it works. The game consists of 10 rounds. Whoever achieves round 10 first is the winner. You all start at the same level. As the game progresses, everyone will reach a different level and thus have a different mission. Phase 10 is a very fun game for travel for 2 or more people.

  1. The Game

The great thing about The Game is that you play not against, but with each other. Together, you must try to beat “the game” by imposing from 0 to 100 and from 100 to 0. You must discard at least 2 cards per turn, ensuring that you get rid of the entire pile at the end. You can optionally play The Game on your own!

  1. Ludo

Ludo is normally played on a large board but fortunately there is also a small version for playing the game while traveling.

  1. Qwixx

Another fun dice game. With Qwixx, the goal is to collect as many points as possible. You strip away the numbers that are thrown. If you cannot do anything at all you have a failed throw and this results in penalty points. You can easily do this game in pairs or with several. Tip: You only need to bring the colored dice with you when traveling. In fact, you can download the Qwixx app where you can use your phone as a scorecard!

  1. Monopoly the card game

The Monopoly card game is based on the board game but it works quite different. You may discard 3 types of cards per turn: money cards, building cards and action cards. With this, you must ensure that you are the first to lay down 3 complete streets and thus win the game. You can play Monopoly the card game with 2 or more people.

  1. Catan the dice game

Another derivative of a great board game and success story. All you need in Catan the dice game is the writing pad and dice. You can develop your own tactics over time, just like in the “real” Catan.

10. Backgammon

Backgammon is normally played on a large board. Fortunately, these days there is also a travel version of Backgammon. It won’t fit in your backpack or suitcase but will come in handy if you go on vacation by car. Get your stones all in first and you win.

  1. Exploding kittens 2 players

This is a separate version of the regular Exploding Kittens line. The game is specially made for 2 people and is easy to take with you when traveling. It is a very tactical game where you have to pay attention and think carefully. Exploding Kittens for 2 is an ideal game for traveling.

  1. Rummikub

Rummikub is a very old game which is fun for young and old alike. By shifting the stones, you must make (at least) threesomes and thus clear your board. The game requires insight and adaptability. For traveling, this Rummikub travel version is ideal.

These are the 12 most fun games for traveling. We ourselves play a lot of games on our world travels and especially enjoy the variety. These are all suitable games for 2 people traveling.
