Packing list Madeira: what not to forget?

Read the blog

Madeira is one of our favorite destinations in Europe. The flower island, as it is better known, has high mountains, cliffs and beautiful nature. The weather in Madeira can be very unpredictable, though. Within an hour, it can go from sunshine to heavy rain. It is therefore important to pack your suitcase or backpack well when you go to Madeira. Here we share our tips for a packing list for Madeira.

Raincoat

This one probably speaks for itself. You can get a lot of enjoyment out of a good raincoat, we learned. So years ago we bought a very good outdoor jacket from The North Face that we still use. This jacket is windproof, does not let rain through, also has waterproof pockets for your valuables.

Waterproof backpack

Keeping yourself dry during a rainstorm is nice, but it’s also important if everything in your backpack stays dry. Therefore, we have been traveling with this waterproof backpack for many years. There is as much space as in a normal backpack but this one is guaranteed to keep your stuff dry. Also nice if you are traveling with a laptop or other electronic devices.

Good walking shoes

This is another must for your trip to Madeira. There are numerous beautiful hikes on the island where you can put your hiking boots to good use. How about the highlight of Madeira: the hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo? For 4 hours you are ascending and descending. You need good shoes to do this. We have been using these hiking boots for several years for long hikes. They are comfortable, long-lasting and durable. What we especially like is that they are not that heavy either. When you’re hiking, the weight feels like you’re just wearing sneakers, amazing!

Madeira is the perfect destination to rent a car and explore the island. In Madeira it's best if you hire a car with Sunnycars. Sunnycars offers a clear range of options, and what we really like is that the insurance is always included. You no longer need to take out insurance with the rental company on site. Book your car with Sunnycars via this link..

Lifestraw water bottle

You can officially drink the tap water in Madeira. It does have a chlorine taste to it and for some, it does not feel safe. The Lifestraw bottle offers a solution to this. Because of the filter contained in the water bottle, 99.99% of the bacteria found in the water is filtered out and you can drink the tap water carefree. If you come across a stream or waterfall during a long hike, you can also refill your bottle here. Ideal if you don’t want to lug around gallons of water and better for the environment.
