From Koh Rong to Sihanoukville
You will have to get to Sihanoukville from Koh Rong first. Daily ferries and speedboats leave for Sihanoukville every hour. You can buy tickets for both the ferry and speedboat at the agencies in Koh Rong, or you can buy your tickets online through 12GO.Asia. The ferry takes about 1 to 1.5 hours while the speedboat will get you to Sihanoukville in 45 minutes.
From Sihanoukville to Kampot by train

The train is a comfortable means of transportation. There are not (good) train tracks everywhere in Asia, but fortunately there are between the major cities in Cambodia. From Sihanoukville to Kampot you can travel by direct train. This one takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. A ticket for the Sihanoukville – Kampot route costs around $6. The only downside of the train is that it leaves only once a day: at 2 p.m. It is also not 100% sure that it runs every day we were told because it is sometimes repaired. Now we haven’t heard much else about that but it’s worth mentioning. Buy tickets for the train in advance through 12GO.Asia (if there is still availability here) and otherwise at the station itself. In the image below, you can see exactly what time the train arrives at each destination.

From Sihanoukville to Kampot by bus
When you arrive in Sihanoukville in the morning, you probably don’t want to wait until 2 p.m. to catch the train. In this case, it is better to travel by bus. The bus costs $10 and takes 3 hours. This includes a short stop. The reason why the bus takes so long is because it travels a large part on a road without asphalt. This means you get shaken back and forth well and it bumps a little. Still, it’s not a really uncomfortable bus ride and you won’t easily get nauseous either. Tickets for the bus can be purchased online through 12GO.Asia or from tour operators on Koh Rong or Sihanoukville.
Conclusion: what is the best way to get from Koh Rong to Kampot?
You will always have to take the ferry or speedboat from Koh Rong to Sihanoukville first anyway. From Sihanoukville, you can then choose either the bus or the train. If you do not have to wait too long for your transfer, it is advisable to take the train because it is cheaper, more comfortable and faster. You sit in a fine compartment and the Cambodian landscape slowly whizzes by.
