Transportation in Cambodia

Read the blog

Transportation in Cambodia is well organized. Unfortunately, transportation prices do tend to be very high, especially compared to the neighbour Vietnam. In this article, we cover all forms of transportation in Cambodia: bus, train, boat, motorbike, bicycle and tuktuk.

Bus in Cambodia

The buses in Cambodia are of good quality. When you buy your ticket through 12GO.Asia, you can immediately see whether you are booking a minivan or a large coach. Since distances in Cambodia are usually not very long, a minivan is often a good option. Want more comfort? Then choose the coach. The Giant Ibis bus in particular proved to be a favorite with us. The service is very good and the seats are comfortable. The bus is an easy means of transportation in Cambodia.

Train in Cambodia

A train runs between Cambodia’s major cities once a day. The schedule below shows the times the train arrives in town. So from Sihanoukville you can easily take the train to Kampot and then on to the capital Phnom Penh. The train is a comfortable way of transportation in Cambodia. If it fits into your schedule in terms of times, taking the train is highly recommended. Just buy tickets at the station.

Boat to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem

Several speedboats depart daily from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem. Tickets can be booked in advance through 12GO.Asia. Here you can also immediately see the times and duration of the speedboat. For a one-way ticket, you pay around €12. To Koh Rong, the speedboat takes 45 minutes.

Tuktuk in Cambodia

In Cambodia, you will encounter few traditional car cabs. Most cabs are tuktuks. Tuktuks are a big part of transportation in Cambodia. There are two different types of tuktuks: the “normal” rickshaws and the scooters with trailers. We personally found the scooters with trailers a lot more comfortable.

Tuktuk in Cambodia

In almost every city in Cambodia, you can easily arrange a cab using the Grab or Pass app. You see the price for the ride in advance, and you can check off which mode of transportation you want. Siem Reap, Kampot and Phnom Penh regularly use these handy apps. When you hail a tuktuk on the street by yourself you are first endlessly bargaining, you don’t always feel like it. Even if you show that it is cheaper through the Grab app they don’t want to do it at that price.

In Siem Reap, fortunately, we met a friendly local who charges a normal (even very cheap) price for tuktuk rides. We did the sunrise tour at Angkor Wat with him in which we were gone for over 8 hours. We only had to pay him $20 for this. Naturally, we gave him a good tip. This is very much appreciated. In addition, we spent 3 more full days with him. His name is Kim Sanh and he is a kind and lovely man. His phone number is +855 92 314 786, the best tuktuk driver in Siem Reap.

Riding your own motorbike in cambodia

In Cambodia, you can also easily rent a motorbike on any street corner. This is one of the most fun forms of transportation in Cambodia where you get to see a lot of local life. You often pay between $5 and $10 for 24 hours. Note that mopeds in Asia are actually a motorcycle by our standards. Therefore, if you do not have a motorcycle license, you are not insured when you have an accident. Read more about renting a motorbike in Asia here.

Cycling in Cambodia

In Cambodia, you will encounter many cyclists. Because it used to be a French colony, many bicycles were produced; they are still widely used today. Especially school-aged children and the elderly are seen quietly cycling by. In Siem Reap, you can also easily rent a bicycle at your ho(s)tel or around the center. It’s a fun way to cycle around downtown and get to the countryside.
