Arrived at the summit?

When you arrive at the top of Mount Batur, you often have to wait a while for the sunrise. This can take as long as 45 minutes if you hike a little faster, as we did. Frequently asked questions

Is climbing Mount Batur tough?

No, it's actually a fairly easy climb. It only takes you 1 to 2.5 hours. In addition, you also walk up in a train of tourists, so the pace is not so fast and you stop often enough to catch your breath. If you have good basic fitness, climbing Mount Batur is a piece of cake. What can be very tough is the way back: this is very steep and with shaky legs from the effort just now, there is a lot of pressure on your thighs. Your muscles will be sore the day after.

In any case, it is certainly not as intense a climb as the 2 / 3-day trek to Mount Rinjani on neighboring island Lombok or the ascent of the Bromo and Ijen volcano on the multi-day Bromo tour on the other neighboring island of Java.

How long is the trek to Mount Batur?

This depends on where you start from (and this again depends on your guide). Do you start from the point below? Then you walk about 2 to 2.5 hours to the top. Do you start halfway up like us? Then you'll be a little over an hour to the summit.

Do I necessarily have to wear hiking boots?

No, this is definitely not necessary! We have even seen people climbing Mount Batur on flip flops. While we certainly don't recommend this, you can easily do it on good sneakers or running shoes. Just make sure there is still enough tread under your shoes, otherwise you will slip quickly on the way back.
