What to do in Dhigurah, The Maldives?

Read the blog

In our opinion, Dhigurah is one of the most beautiful islands in the Maldives. It is elongated (almost 4 kilometers long) but super narrow. You will find miles of beautiful white beaches with a clear blue sea and countless palm trees, a real paradise. In this extensive article you can read how to get to Dhigurah, which accommodations we recommend and we answer the question: ‘what to do in Dhigurah?

Activities on Dhigurah

Like most local islands in the Maldives, there are not that many activities on Dhigurah other than enjoying the beautiful beach and sea.

Beach Dhigurah

1. A morning walk to the sandbar of Dhigurah

Most accommodations on Dhigurah are in the north of the island, near the harbor and bikini beach. It is therefore wonderful to take an early morning walk to the south, where the island turns into a sandbank. It really looks like paradise here. The walk back and forth is about 7 kilometers, perfect for stretching your legs early in the morning.

2. The elongated beaches

Almost the entire left side of Dhigurah is a bikini beach. So here you are allowed to walk around, sunbathe and swim everywhere in swimwear. Once you go back onto the island, however, you should cover up. A shirt and shorts will do.

The beaches of Dhigurah are truly beautiful: palm trees, white beaches and clear, blue sea, what more could you want? Watch out for sand fleas, though; you can keep these away by protecting yourself with coconut oil and mosquito spray. In addition, many mosquitoes also fly around at sunset, since Dhigurah is largely made up of jungle.

3. Water sports activities on Dhigurah

Then, of course, there are many fun water sports activities. You can book all this at Oiyaa Watersports Club, at the time of our visit (2025) the only provider of water sports activities on Dhigurah. We also found it super well organized with them, very nice people who are always up for a chat. It is good to know that you can usually haggle a little on the price at Oiyaa Watersports Club.

  • Flyboarding. Our favorite. We did this here for the first time and we thought it was SO cool!
  • Jet skiing
  • Waterskiing and wakeboarding
  • Parasailing
  • Supping
  • Canoeing

4. Whale shark tour from Dhigurah

Dhigurah is known to have whale sharks swimming right along the coast. The chances are very small that you can spot them yourself from the beach, because they usually swim deeper, but you can go on a whale shark tour. With the speedboat you then sail around Dhigurah to check where they are. Then you jump into the water and can snorkel with them for a bit. It is important to note that they are not fed during this. So this is an ethical way to see whale sharks.

You can also do the same whale shark tour from Maafushi. However, you will first spend 1.5 hours on the speedboat to get to Dhigurah, making it a very long day. You may also be unlucky if there is too much wind, preventing the boat from going. The whale shark tour from Dhigurah costs $80 and can easily be booked at your accommodation.

5. Snorkeling at Dhigurah

At bikini beach on Dhigurah, you can also snorkel beautifully. Besides beautiful, vibrant coral, you have a very good chance of seeing turtles while snorkeling at Dhigurah! When you enter the water at Turtle Reef, you have to keep looking around carefully to see turtles. You can rent snorkels at your accommodation in Dhigurah.

6. Diving at Dhigurah

Dhigurah seems to be one of the most beautiful places in the Maldives for diving. Yet you will not find any diving schools where you can just walk in and book a dive. You do this on Dhigurah through your hotel. We found this a strange way of doing things, so we decided not to do it, since we had already dived in Maafushi as well. Still, many boats with divers go from Dhigurah harbor every day. In retrospect, we do regret a little that we skipped this in this amazing place after seeing cool photos and the stories of other travelers.
