Moalboal is a surprisingly fun destination as a base on Cebu Island in The Philippines. It is very touristy, but that also brings with it a lot of fun. Moalboal is mainly known for the sardine run, which you can see here all year round, but there are a few more fun things to do in Moalboal you don’t want to miss!

Sardine run
Moalboal’s most famous activity is the sardine run. Every day, millions of sardines swim back and forth off the coast of Moalboal. No matter when you go to Moalboal, you will always see them. It’s good to know, though, that in the dry season you have better visibility in the water.
You can find the sardine run off the entire coast of Moalboal. This is the Google Maps location where we entered the water. In the morning between 7:30 and 8:30, most instructors go into the water with large groups of tourists. We therefore recommend going a little earlier, around 6:30 am, or just later in the morning/afternoon.
When there are so many people in the water at the same time it is almost impossible to snorkel and you are often too close to each other causing people to damage (even more) the coral. The coral in Moalboal is already terribly damaged by the thousands of tourists who waltz over here every day. Do your research well in advance and make sure you go snorkeling responsibly. Anyway, don’t miss this out. The sardine run is the numer one in the things to do in Moalboal.
Canyoning in Moalboal
In addition to the sardine run, Moalboal is also known for canyoning. During canyoning, you go walking, scrambling, sliding and jumping down the river, walking in a beautiful cave and enjoying the amazing nature. You jump from meters-high cliffs into the river and climb over the rocks. Canyoning in Moalboal is very touristy, but so much fun to do. Definitely add this to your list of things to do in Moalboal.
Canyoning in Moalboal can be booked anywhere. We booked it with Jimmy and were very satisfied with this. Everything was well arranged and he communicates clearly. You can WhatsApp him at +63 955 177 7871. The price for canyoning in Moalboal varies between 2000 and 2500 pesos (€33 – €41) for a group tour.

White beach in Moalboal
White beach is the most fun beach in Moalboal. In the afternoon, travelers often gather here to play volleyball, drink beers and coconuts and, of course, enjoy a beautiful sunset. You can also snorkel well at White beach, so bring your snorkeling kit! White beach is a 15-minute scooter ride from downtown Moalboal, so it’s a good drive.
Hiking to the peaks (+ very nice motorbike ride)
Do you have an extra day in Moalboal? Then you can make a very nice motorbike trip and hike. This will take a very long day, but it is all worth it. There are three cool peaks you can climb and we will describe them all below.
For each peak, you pay between 50 and 100 peso (€0.80 – €1.60) entrance fee.

Casino Peak Hiking Trail
From Moalboal, you will be driving for 1.5 hours before you get to the starting point of Casino Peak. Beware, this route goes over a very bad stretch of road where you have to ride your motorbike confidently. Think you won’t be able to do this? Then it’s smart to detour a bit. First set your Google Maps to “Alegría,” drive here and only then set your Google Maps to the Casino Peak Hiking Trail. This is an easier route to drive, but it will take you a little longer.
Can’t find it? Then ask the helpful locals, they can point you in the right direction. The climb to Casino Peak takes no more than half an hour. After that, you already have an amazing view of the surrounding area. Enjoy the beautiful hills, which somewhat resemble the Chocolate Hills in Bohol and completely relax. We found Casino Peak to be one of the best climbs with fantastic views! After you get back to your motorbike you can drive back a bit to Patimz Bistro. Here they serve tasty sandwiches, unlimited coffee and at the same time you have another beautiful ocean view.
Osmeña Peak
This is the easiest hike of all. To get to the top of Osmeña Peak you are only hiking for 20 minutes. After this you are already with your head in the clouds (very literally on some days). At Osmeña Peak, however, it is mandatory to take a guide for 100 peso per person.
Kandungaw Peak
Kandungaw Peak requires the most effort to reach the top. You spend an hour hiking, with some sections requiring very substantial climbing. Nevertheless, the view from the top is obviously worth it. On clear days, you can even see neighboring island Negros.
Now you have everything you need to be well-prepared for your visit to Moalboal, including the best things to do. Prepare yourself even better by booking one of our recommended accommodations below. Have fun in Moalboal!
