Cooking class in Bangkok: this is what you want to do!

Read the blog

Thai cuisine is known for its tasty but spicy food. Different curries, noodles and lots of rice is what you can expect in Thailand. The nice thing is: you don’t have to miss the delicious dishes when you get back home. In fact, there are many different cooking courses in Thailand. We ourselves followed a great cooking course in Bangkok and will tell you all about it in this article.

Green Garden Cookery School

We took the cooking course, after doing a lot of research, at Green Garden Cookery School. The owner, May Kaidee, has a lot of experience as a chef and she shows it at the cooking class. We especially liked this cooking class because we got to make 8(!) different dishes. That way you take home a lot more experience and you can have some nice variety.

What does the cooking course in Bangkok look like?

In the morning at 09:00 you will be expected at the Green Garden (this is the Google Maps location). Here you will meet the friendly May Kaidee and the other women who will introduce you to Thai cooking today. After a round of introductions, you will be given an apron and all the dishes you will make today will be named.

First, start by making the Tom Yam curry paste and the green curry paste. It is so special how they do this and how tasteful this is right away. And the best part: all the ingredients are in the supermarkets back home so you can use these when you leave Thailand!

After this, you will start making all the dishes. Each time, you make one or two dishes that you get to eat immediately afterwards. The flavors will really amaze you: with relatively few ingredients, you can really make a party out of them. In between, May Kaidee will do another dance and introduce you to a unique massage technique.

After making 7 dishes, you will conclude with the typical Thai dessert: Mango sticky rice. This amazing combination of rice, coconut milk, sugar and mango is hugely popular among all tourists. Because you are now making the mango sticky rice yourself you will notice that it is not difficult at all to make this, you can easily do this yourself at home!

What dishes will you make at the cooking class in Bangkok?

The menu sometimes changes but basically the following 8 dishes are made during the cooking course in Bangkok:

  • Tom Yam Soup
  • Coconut Milk Soup
  • Massaman Curry
  • Green Curry
  • Pad Thai
  • Fried spring rolls (with a homemade peanut + sweet & sour sauce)
  • Papaya salad
  • Mango sticky rice

You will be asked again in advance to indicate any allergies. It is important that you mention this well because sometimes it goes very quickly and you may miss ingredients as a result. Furthermore, this cooking course specializes in making vegetarian and vegan dishes. If you prefer to make the dishes with meat/fish this is also possible.

Additional information cooking course in Bangkok

Most cooking courses cost between 2,000 and 2,500 baht (€56 – €70). May Kaidee’s cooking course costs only 1,500 baht (€38) per person. So for this money, you make 8 dishes, which is much more than in traditional cooking courses (3 or 4 dishes). There is a nice pace in making the dishes though so make sure you come to the cooking class with enough energy. Also, make sure you haven’t had breakfast before the cooking class. You are going to make so many dishes and want to eat everything that it is convenient to come to the cooking class with an empty belly. Did you get excited about this cooking course?
