Transportation in Thailand is well organized; it is an easy country to travel around in. There are many different means of transportation and you can always easily arrive at your destination. Through 12GO.Asia, you can see the times of routes in advance and buy tickets already. This is especially useful for routes between popular cities or islands in Thailand. In this article, we tell you all about transportation in Thailand.

Bus / minivan
Between most cities there are no buses but minivans. The minivans can drive faster and maneuver more handily through traffic but that does not mean it is comfortable. On the contrary, you are often fairly crammed into a minivan, there is little space and and almost never room for luggage either. Make sure you prefer not to sit in a minivan for more than 3 hours at a time because it is really very uncomfortable, and not good for your joints and back.
Before boarding the minivan, always make sure you check that it is indeed driving to the city you need to go to. You won’t be the first traveler to accidentally get into the wrong minivan. For an hour in the minivan, expect a ticket price of 100 – 200 baht (€3 – €5) per person.
Ferry
Ferries operate between tourist islands in southern Thailand. These are often very large boats where you sit comfortably. These ferries can carry hundreds of people at a time. Therefore, the price is a lot lower than a speedboat ticket. The ferry does travel a bit slower than the speedboat but we ourselves do not find this a problem. From Koh Phi Phi to Ao Nang, you spend 2 hours on the ferry. Tickets for 2 hours on the ferry cost an average of 400 – 500 baht (€11 – €14).

Speedboat
Speedboats operate between the less touristy islands. These are a lot faster than the ferry but also a lot rougher. They sail very fast, catching blows from the waves as a result, which results in being rocked back and forth. Still, sometimes you will have to take a speedboat if you want to go to the beautiful and peaceful islands of Koh Muk and Koh Yao Noi. For an hour on the speedboat, you pay an average of 800 baht (€22).
Cab / Grab / Bolt
On the small islands such as Koh Muk and Koh Lipe, a motorcycle cab is often used. This is a scooter with a sidecar that you can sit in. For this you pay 50 baht (€1.30) per person. On the larger islands or cities, you will use a cab, grab or bolt.
We recommend always checking if Grab or Bolt works in the city you are in. This is the safest way to travel and you know exactly how much it costs. This saves you from endless bargaining after which you often end up still paying too much.
Motorcycle
A motorcycle is the ideal mode of transportation in Thailand. With a motorcycle, you never have to stand in traffic jams, it’s fun to enjoy the view this way, and it’s easy to drive. In (almost) every place in Thailand you can easily rent a motorcycle. A motorcycle costs on average between 200 and 300 baht per day (€6 – €8).

Keep in mind that if you do not have a motorcycle license, you are not insured. If you have an accident you will have to pay for everything yourself. This can run into the thousands of euros. For more information, also read this article: what to look out for when renting a moped in Asia?
