What is Mauritius like for digital nomads?
First, the main question of how Mauritius pleased us as digital nomads. We can’t say other than that it is a fantastic experience. The quiet island life with a good internet connection, delicious food and the most beautiful sunsets is a combination that makes us very happy. Mauritius has everything you are looking for in a destination if you love relaxed island life and adventures.
What is the Internet connection like in Mauritius?
Of course, a good Internet connection is crucial as a digital nomad in Mauritius. We were positively surprised by the strong connection in all the places we worked. Even in cafes, the WiFi was good enough to support the heavy programs we use for our work.
Also, there is a good sim card in Mauritius that you can work on using your hotspot if the Internet connection is not so good for once. However, we never had to do this in a month.

Which SIM card in Mauritius for digital nomads?
The best SIM card in Mauritius for digital nomads is Emtel. Emtel has good coverage all over the island and offers a fast Internet connection. You can only purchase a sim card with unlimited data for 30 days. This costs 1,500 MUR (€30) per sim card.
Are you staying in Mauritius for more than 30 days? Then you can easily top up the SIM card yourself online through Emtel’s website for 300 MUR (€6) where you get another 30 days of unlimited data.

What are the best places to work in Mauritius for digital nomads?
An overview of the best places to work in Mauritius can be found below. Split into the different tourist destinations, our experiences and those of other digital nomads in Mauritius.
1. The Hive ~ Tamarin, South-West Mauritius
Our favorite coworking in southwest Mauritius. The Hive is located in Tamarin, a place mostly known among expats. The Hive is a super quiet co-working space where (anno 2026) very few people work so you can put in your hours undisturbed. There is also a coffee machine and water filter so you can get through your day well hydrated.
For a day pass at The Hive, you pay 500 MUR (€10), which is a great price for a day of coworking in Mauritius. A 1-minute walk from The Hive you will find pains et moulins, a delicious bakery where you can get freshly made sandwiches and delicacies. For us, the perfect place to have lunch and enjoy the fresh French baguettes. Opposite The Hive is the shopping center where you can get fantastic Indian food and find the supermarket Super U. Everything you need as a digital nomad in Mauritius, close by.
2. iva Coffee ~ Tamarin, South-West Mauritius
A coffee shop, also in Tamarin, with nice places to unfold your laptop. It is not recommended to hold meetings here, but if you are just busy by yourself on your laptop, it is a great place to work. The coffee is good, the lunch is tasty and the sweet pastries are the best. You do quickly get tempted to eat something sweet when you are working here as a digital nomad in Mauritius, so keep that in mind.
3. Workshop 17 ~ Grand Baie, North-West Mauritius
From the southwest, we move to the northwest. The region of Grand Baie is really beautiful and therefore a must visit for digital nomads in Mauritius. Walking to the beach after a day of work to watch the sunset is for us an ultimate feeling of freedom and one of the reasons why we work remotely.
Workshop 17 is a beautiful coworking in Mauritius. The facilities are very good for a remote workplace: good chairs, nice design, nice atmosphere and good coffee. It is on the expensive side, but it is also a really nice workspace. Exactly how much you pay at this coworking in Mauritius depends on how many days you want to work there and how long you stay. It is most convenient to drive by and check directly with the desk.
4. Sweet & Brunch ~ Grand Baie, Northwest Mauritius
This is a cute, small lunch spot where you can also just pop open your laptop. We personally didn’t find it suitable to sit here for a whole day, but a half-day with coffee and delicious lunch is perfect. The avocado toast and truffle egg toast were our favorite lunch dishes.
5. Bloom ~ Grand Baie, northwest Mauritius
A wonderful place where the coffee is delicious, the dishes look perfect and the staff is friendly. You can even idyllically sit outside to work, but of course, as a true digital nomad, you know that this is nice for half an hour, but it doesn’t really work. Bloom we found really a wonderful place to work as digital nomads in Mauritius.
6. Coco work ~ Grand Baie, northwest Mauritius
We have not been here ourselves but online it says it is a coworking in Grand Baie. If you find Workshop17 too expensive or just want a day of something different you could possibly drive by here, but we didn’t test this one out ourselves. Since it says it is a coworking, we did want to include it in this list.
7. Workshop 17 ~ Port Louis, capital of Mauritius
Port Louis is the largest city and capital of Mauritius. There is not much special to see in Port Louis and therefore we also recommend not staying here. In the unlikely event that you do find yourself in Port Louis and need to work, Workshop 17 is also recommended as a coworking space in Mauritius.
8. Coworking Port Louis ~ Port Louis, capital of Mauritius.
Finally, you can also work in the coworking Port Louis (yes, this is the name of the coworking, original lol). It is located in an old colonial house with modern decor. Seeing this will immediately give you inspiration to get to work nicely.

Coworkings in southern Mauritius
In the south (south-east) of Mauritius near Savannah, you will also find some coworking. Workshop 17 also has a coworking here. However, there are very few tourists on this side of the island, so we would also not recommend staying here for an extended period of time as a digital nomad in Mauritius.
What is the best place to stay as a digital nomad in Mauritius?
As you have read above, the coworkings in Mauritius are found in Grand Baie and Tamarin. This is why we recommend staying in these two places during your trip in Mauritius.
Grand Baie as a digital nomad
Grand Baie and its surroundings are known for its beautiful clear blue sea. It is a popular place among tourists to enjoy sun, sea, beach and boat tours. Near Grand Baie you will also find the villages of Cap Malheureux and Trou aux Biches. So you don’t necessarily have to stay in Grand Baie as a digital nomad in Mauritius. You mainly go to the area around Grand Baie to enjoy the peaceful island life and the sea to the fullest. There is little adventure to be found, for that you have to go to the south of Mauritius.
Tamarin as a digital nomad
Tamarin is a lot further south, near beautiful Le Morne. From Tamarin it is only a short drive to the beautiful Black River Gorges National Park where you can hike, zipline, visit waterfalls and viewpoints. It feels very different from Grand Baie, which is precisely why we think it is the perfect combination for digital nomads in Mauritius.
The popular Flic en Flac is near Tamarin, a 15 to 20 minute scooter ride away. We stayed in Flic en Flac for a time and scooted to The Hive in Tamarin every day to work, but this was sometimes a bit too much. If you only work a few days a week this is fine though.
Belle Mare ~ east coast Mauritius
The east coast of Mauritius is not very suitable for digital nomads. You will find almost only (extremely expensive) resorts here. Consequently, there are few restaurants or coffee shops to be found and certainly no coworking. We did a weekend trip to the east coast from Flic en Flac / Tamarin and this was perfect. This way you can still see this side of the island without having to work.

Transportation in Mauritius for digital nomads
As for transportation in Mauritius, you really need your own. The island is a lot bigger than you think and without your own scooter or car you won’t easily get to many places. You can book a tour or travel by (expensive) cab, but even in the cities themselves the nice eateries, coworkings and the beach are miles away from each other.
Uber is not well known in Mauritius (Yugo is, which is the local uber), so you cannot easily grab a cab for a short ride either. Scooter riding in Mauritius can be fairly chaotic because you are mostly driving on 80 kilometers per hour roads. If you are not used to this, we also recommend not riding a scooter. Do you already have scooter experience in Asia? Then it will be a lot easier.
How expensive is Mauritius for digital nomads
Accommodations in Mauritius are generally quite expensive. For a simple double room you easily pay €40 per night, for a simple apartment €55 per night and for a nice room in a hotel more than €100 per night. Anyway, most of the accommodations in Mauritius, outside the beautiful resorts, are vastly outdated and the furnishings seem to be from the 1950s.
Furthermore, groceries are not cheap either. Almost every product has to be imported which of course raises prices a lot. Especially fruits and vegetables are very expensive. When you go out to eat you pay an average of €10 – €15 for a main course. For a boat tour you pay between €70 and €100 for a whole day. This is also certainly not cheap.
All in all, on a weekday we spent an average of €80. On the weekends, you do spend a lot more money if you go on a boat tour and eat out a bit more often. Nevertheless, Mauritius is still worth visiting as a digital nomad. Also read our extensive blog with the things to do in Mauritius -16 great activities .
What is the food like in Mauritius?
The food in Mauritius is fantastic. Due to its colonial history, you’ll find influences from both French and Indian cuisine throughout the country. That means you’ll have a delicious breakfast with a fresh croissant from the bakery, lunch with a fresh, crusty baguette with French cheese and enjoy Indian curries with naan in the evening.

In addition, in almost every tourist spot you will find a Super U. This is an incredibly large supermarket that has everything you need. So you can also enjoy cooking for yourself in Mauritius.
Can you play sports well in Mauritius?
For digital nomads in Mauritius who want to keep routine while working and traveling, it is important to be able to exercise as well. In Mauritius, you will find a number of gyms near the tourist spots, but they are very expensive. For example, in Flic en Flac at Sparc sports complex, we had to pay 750 MUR (€15) per person for a day pass. Near The Hive in Tamarin there is also a large gym.
Exercising outdoors is then a better idea. Due to the high humidity in (mainly the south of) Mauritius, early morning exercise is recommended. We were running along the beach 3 times a week at 06:30. Enjoying the morning sun, the sound of the waves and the birds, this was a wonderful start to the day. Then a cooling dip in the sea and your morning couldn’t get any better.
Summary of the best remote workplaces in Mauritius for digital nomads
So there are not very many coworkings in Mauritius, but fortunately you can also open your laptop at many coffee shops or lunchrooms. Of course, you can also rent your own apartment from which you can work. We also did this for 2 weeks.
