Destinations in Cambodia
Cambodia is a country that does not have a huge number of highlights. As a result, destinations in Cambodia are also in lesser quantities than neighboring countries Thailand and Vietnam.
Cambodia has some nice cities, such as Siem Reap and Kampot. Ook vind je eilanden bij Cambodja. Bekijk het onderstaande overzicht van onze bestemmingen in Cambodja. In addition to the destinations we visited, you can also go to Koh Rong Samloem, Kep, Cardamom Mountains and Battambang.
The Violent History
Cambodia has a tragic past that the world must not forget. During the rule of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979, more than two million people were killed or died of disease and exhaustion. If you travel to Cambodia, you can better understand the history of this period by visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, better known as the S21 prison, and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where thousands of people were executed and buried. These are intense activities, but they are absolutely not to be missed in Cambodia.
Millions of landmines were laid in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge era, the impact of which is still visible today. Many Cambodians are missing an arm or leg. Visit the Landmine Museum to learn more about the mines. The APOPO Rat Center is an organization that uses trained rats to detect and remove landmines. This is also worth a visit in Cambodia.
Fun activities in Cambodia
Cambodia is an excellent country to do some fun activities. It is usually cheaper than in Thailand or Malaysia. For example, spend an afternoon wakeboarding or water-skiing at Wake Park in Siem Reap. During the dry season, it can get pretty hot in Cambodia. An afternoon of water fun is a fantastic choice to cool off in a fun way.
Volunteering in a local village was an unforgettable experience in Cambodia. Although volunteering in Cambodia is not in a good light, we found a gem of a project. Cambodia is known for orphanages set up to attract volunteers. The children there are not orphans and are abandoned by their parents. This is absolutely not ethical, so absolutely do not start this. We found a super local project: Teaching English at a school in a local village. It was set up by a resident of the village whom we met at the landmine museum. There is no big organization in between here either. You will stay in a homestay with a family in the local village during the period of volunteering. Immerse yourself completely in local life and teach the children English. This will give them a greater chance of getting a job and a better salary.
