Travelers from Malaysia to Thailand often do so from Langkawi to Koh Lipe. These islands are only 1.5 hours by boat from each other yet they look very different. Langkawi is more overgrown, green nature and countryside can be seen a lot here. Koh Lipe, on the other hand, is a little paradise: white beaches and clear waters make this a popular destination. In this article, we’ll tell you exactly how to get from Langkawi to Koh Lipe and how it works with the border crossing.

By boat from Langkawi to Koh Lipe
Tickets for the ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe can be purchased in advance through this site. It is wise to buy the tickets 2 days in advance. Especially in high season, the ferry sells out quickly. Note that you have to go to the Telaga terminal in Langkawi.
It is wise to make sure you are at the Telaga terminal 1 hour in advance. In fact, as of then you can check in and you will be well ahead of time. You can easily get to the Telaga terminal by Grab. Grab also works well early in the morning: as of 07:00, a driver was already available with us. When you check in, you must fill out a form with all your personal information and a small form that you must keep for Thailand’s customs. After this, you wait a while until you are called 15 minutes beforehand to board the ferry. Then it’s time to sail from Langkawi to Koh Lipe.

In line, you have to show your passport again and at the counter you get an exit stamp of your Malaysia visa. After this, you walk a short distance and then you have to hand your passport to a staff member. It feels wrong to do this but this is really necessary. You are not allowed to keep it with you yourself. This route has been sailed for years and (fortunately) nothing has ever happened to passports.
After this, you can find a spot on the ferry and 1.5 hours later you will arrive in Koh Lipe. The big ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe cannot sail all the way to the beach at its final destination. Therefore, with only your carry-on luggage, you board a small longtail boat that takes you to shore.
Here you then wait for a seat. By now the suitcases and backpacks have been dropped on the beach but you are not allowed to pack them yet. You wait on the seat until your nationality is called. This takes 15 – 45 minutes. Then walk with me to the immigration office (5-minute walk across the beach). Here you have to hand over the form (which you filled out in Langkawi) and scan your index fingers. After this, you will get a stamp in your passport: this is your visa.

After you get your passport and stamp you walk back to the arrival point. Here you have to pay 200 baht (€5.50) per person in national park fee. You may also pay with ringgit if you don’t already have baht. This ranges between 25 and 30 ringgit per person. Should you like to withdraw Thai baht right away, you can go to the atm right after you arrive. This can be found on walking street a 10-minute walk from the arrival point. Be sure to read the tips on the ATM withdrawal in Thailand in advance.
After this is all settled and you have paid the national park fee, you can pack your suitcase or backpack and take the motorcycle cab to your hotel. A motorcycle cab ride on Koh Lipe costs 50 baht (€1.30) per person.
After Koh Lipe, continue your journey in Thailand to undiscovered Koh Muk or the party island of Koh Phi Phi. Tickets for the speedboats are easily purchased from tour providers in Koh Lipe or through 12GO.
