Do: Visit a Muay Thai match in Bangkok!

Read the blog

Wow! One of the coolest things we did in Bangkok was go to a Muay Thai match. We ourselves have attended a few Muay Thai trainings now and wanted to see how the real professionals do it. At Lumpinee Stadium, we had a great night with 11 fights! Below we tell you all about the Muay Thai competition in Bangkok as well as give you more information on where to book it.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a Thai martial art. It is similar to kickboxing, but there are differences. In Muay Thai, you are also allowed to use your elbows to punch as well as to clinch. It is a sport for which you must have rock-solid fitness. Many travelers take some beginner Muay Thai training classes in Thailand.

What tickets to the Muay Thai competition in Bangkok should you buy?

Bangkok has many different places where you can watch Muay Thai matches. The two most famous stadiums are the Rajadamnern Muay Thai Stadium and the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium. We went to Lumpinee ourselves and this was a great night. You can buy tickets in advance through this site. Here you can also see which days a competition is held. If you buy the tickets then you will be fine with the cheapest option. The cheapest tickets to the Muay Thai match are often around 1,200 / 1,500 baht (€35 – 40). We bought these tickets ourselves and you are pretty close to the ring!

Lumpinee boxing stadium in Bangkok

First, keep in mind that the New Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, without traffic jams, is a half-hour drive from downtown Bangkok. In the evening hours, this easily becomes 1 to 1.5 hours because the traffic around Bangkok is jammed then. So get to the stadium well in advance if you don’t want to miss the start of the games. If you go by Grab or Bolt, you can set the location to “Taxi Stand New Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

When you get out of here, the loud music already meets you, nice atmosphere! With the online tickets on your phone, you walk to a ticket counter where you get the physical tickets in your hands. After this, walk on to the entrance. Here you must turn in all the food and drink you carry. So make sure everything is gone before you go in.

Finally, you are inside and enter the hall. It looks quite small like this in real life but how cozy it is! There is a nice atmosphere, good music and everyone is having a good time. Punctually at the appointed time, the first match begins. Things immediately get tough. It’s so cool to see this up close! Suddenly two rounds of MMA also came between us, which was again so different and much more intense. The poster said it would take 2 hours but we were inside for 3.5 hours. In fact, we were actually supposed to see 7 games but it suddenly became 11!

Afterwards, everyone streams out at the same time. There are many cabs waiting but they charge an extremely high amount to get back to town. It is most convenient to arrange in advance for a Grab or Bolt to come pick you up. If that fails, you can also try to arrange for a Grab or Bolt via the app 20 minutes before the end. It doesn’t always work out and sometimes you just have to pay extra to take a cab back. In any case, you had a great evening. For us, it is definitely worth repeating!
